President Park Geun-hye presided over this year¡¯s fourth Ministerial Meeting on Regulatory Reform on Nov. 6. There, the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning, the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport made presentations on the current status and future tasks regarding deregulation for the creation of new industries.

The presentations included the Korean government¡¯s policy for the growth of six new industries based on deregulation and the creation of more market demand. These sectors refer to IoT convergence product manufacturing, 3D printing, smart homes, carbon fiber, integrated photovoltaic modules and a generator and boiler for home use.

The government is planning to expand the frequency bandwidth for IoT services from 7 GHz to 15 GHz to accelerate the growth of the IoT sector while setting up an open lab for compatibility tests covering various types of smart home equipment. At the same time, a KS standard is to be prepared with regard to inter-device communications standards so that the government itself guarantees the compatibility.

In addition, test flights at night, at high altitudes and out of visible areas are to be allowed from next month for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and pilot demonstration projects are launched based on one-stop authorization so that the development of the drone industry is expedited. The 5 GHz bandwidth frequency is assigned in January next year for ground UAV control.
